When communicating with others try these active listening skills:

M=Minimal encouragers are how you show you are tracking with the conversation. ie. “uh, oh, I see, um, wow”

O=Open ended questions keeps the conversation going. ie. “Tell me about your day, then what happened?”

R=Reflecting back the last few words the person said.

E=Emotion labeling is when you name the emotion you hear in the conversation. ie. “That sounds scary, that sounds sad”

P=Paraphrase what the person is saying. ie. “So it sounds like you are……”

I=I statements tell the other person how the conversation is affecting you. ie. “When you use that tone it makes me feel like you don’t value me.”

E=Empathy is how to tell someone you relate to them but not from a position of pity or looking down at them.
